Managing Task Dependencies (Blocking & Blocked)

Managing Task Dependencies (Blocking & Blocked)

Overview

Task dependencies help you define relationships between tasks, ensuring that certain tasks are completed before others begin. This structure prevents delays and keeps your workflow in order.

There are two types of dependencies:

  • Blocking: This task must be completed before others can proceed.

  • Blocked: This task cannot start until its blocking task is completed.

When to Use Task Dependencies

Use dependencies when:

  • One task relies on the outcome of another.

  • Tasks need to follow a specific sequence.

  • You want to prevent team members from working on tasks prematurely.

How to Set Task Dependencies

From the Task Detail View

  1. Open the task you want to mark as Blocked.

  2. Scroll to the Dependencies or Linked Tasks section.

  3. Click Add Dependency.

  4. Search and select the task that blocks this task.

  5. Save changes.

The task you’re editing will now show:

Blocked By → [Blocking Task Name]

Blocking → [Blocked Task Name]

Important Notes

  1.  A task can be completed even if it is Blocked. However, we will show an information message to get the confirmation.
Manual overriding of task though it is marked as Blocked
  • Dependencies are visually indicated in your task view or board.

  • Tasks can have multiple blocking or blocked relationships.

  • Removing a dependency will restore the task’s standalone status.

  • Completed task will be showing in the list with a green check mark

Example Use Cases

  • "Write Content" must be completed before "Publish Blog Post".

  • "Client Approval" blocks "Final Delivery".

  • "QA Testing" is blocked until "Development Complete".
